Feeding

One of the keys to keeping birds in good condition is their diet. All my birds are fed a "Green Dish" every mourning which consists of:

  • Spinach/Silverbeet and/or
  • Endive and/or
  • Chickory and/or
  • Celery
  • Soaked & Sprouted Mung Beans, Wheat & Sunflower
  • Snow Pea Sprouts
  • Soft Sweet Corn &
  • Tip Top 9 Grain Bread

A good seed mixture for cockatiels is a Peachface mix or a Budgie mix with Sunflower added. A small parrot mix usually contains lots of seed that cockatiels will not eat. I feed my birds a seed mix called "AviGrain AA" which I get from Aviculture Accessories here in Sydney. The main ingredients are Canary and Japanese Millet with the seed mix consisting of:

  • Canary Seed
  • Japanese Millet
  • French White Millet
  • 10% Grey Stripe Sunflower (15% in winter)
  • Hulled Oats
  • Panicum
  • Safflower

My birds also have access to Shellgrit all the time. I give them Canundra grit with charcoal mixed in with it which they absolutely love. They are also given Cuttlefish bone every now and again which usually lasts only a few hours in a couple of the aviaries.

Greens & Vegetables you may wish to try with your cockatiels are:

  • Spinach/Silverbeet
  • Endive
  • Chickory
  • Celery
  • Mung Beans
  • Snow Pea Sprouts
  • Sweet Corn
  • Peas
  • Beans
  • Apple
  • Carrot
  • Grevillea
  • Bottlebrush
  • Millet Sprays
  • Sorgum Sprays

You should wash all greens thoroughly before giving them to your birds. Feed greens to your bird at least once or twice a day, as well as fresh water every day.

NEVER give a bird advocado as it will kill them.
